Given the importance of role models in children’ lives, the importance of engaging with both parents/carers and the wider community is key. We have worked hard to ensure that Gulval School is at the very heart of the community it serves, the strong links we have developed give our pupils a sense of place and, through the support we receive,  our achievements and aspirations are bound by imagination only. Pupils at Gulval thrive on the input and the incredible community support we receive.

Community Engagement:

Big Dig DaysOur 9th Big Dig day was a huge success with so many of our families coming together on a Saturday to transform the school grounds. Big Dig work has included learning walls painted on the exterior of the school, the erection of a poly tunnel and outdoor classroom space, the installation of a tractor tyre park, the creation of an animal zone (for our goats, chickens and rabbits), library murals, creation of a music room, fence painting, gardening… the list is endless! Big Dig days are always great fun rain of shine.
FROGS (Friends and Relatives of Gulval School)Gulval School PTA is active and well supported, it supports the school by holding events including fairs, discos and coffee mornings. FROGS events have raised a great deal off money since 2014 which is used to make our school and our curriculum offer even better!
Expedition WeeksPupils take part in expedition week every year, the aim being to develop character and skill through real life experience. In September 2019, 90 children completed the Coast to Coast challenge, walking 11 miles over moorland from St Ives to Gulval to achieve this. Reception Class and KS1 all climbed to the top of St Michael’s Mount and 10 children stood on the summit of Snowdon. This was our first expedition to North Wales but definitely not our last! Community expedition weeks have raised in excess of £9000 through sponsorship and are very well supported.
McMillan Coffee morningA group of children regularly attend a local McMillan Coffee Morning, meeting and talking to residents of the village raising the profile of the school and strengthening links between us and the community. We have made lots of friends in the Gulval WI who are great supporters of our school and community.
Coffee MorningsEach class hosts a coffee morning throughout the year, planning, organising and delivering an opportunity for our community to join us in school. One event with a WW2 theme gave us all the opportunity to try some cakes and biscuits made with original recipes.
Shining Star AssembliesWe invite our community into school for assemblies and to share our successes in school. Bronze, Silver and Gold assemblies are always busy with pupils able to share their rewards with family members. There’s always time for a quick photo at the end!
Mazey DayEach year our school takes an enthusiastic part in Penzance’s Mazey Day cultural celebration by making a large willow sculpture, this is always a big event and is always well supported.
FacebookOur Facebook community is growing and is by far our most effective form of communication, the interaction with the community is a way to promote out core values, keep parents informed and share our successes. This is our real time newsletter!!
